A multi-story building at night features windows illuminated in various colors and a large mural depicting two winged figures, reminiscent of the artwork found at CHRISTUS Children's Hospital in San Antonio. Trees and street lamps are visible in the foreground, with a full moon in the sky.

Converting an aging traditional hospital into a world-class children’s hospital without losing a day of function was no small feat. Throughout the entire construction process, the emergency room, ICU, NICU, and other specialized facilities had to remain operational. As exterior architect, OVERLAND faced the challenge of transforming a patchwork façade of exteriors from the 1950s and subsequent eras. Using the iconic mosaic mural by local artist Jesse Treviño, visible throughout downtown, OVERLAND informed the exterior transformation with vibrant colors. Playing off the mural, the design incorporated windows and illuminated colored panels to brighten the exterior. At night, these glass panels light up with high-efficiency LED fixtures, creating a canvas of hope and support for families inside.

Initially, the budget for aesthetic improvements was limited, with most funds allocated to mission-critical interior refurbishments. However, inspired by the vision, many private philanthropists contributed. The Goldsbury Foundation funded a series of gardens, including a kitchen and meditation garden, providing respite and exposure to green space, which aids the healing process. The redesign opened the building to Milam Park, making it more inviting. As a result, the hospital attracted partnerships with Baylor Medicine and Texas Children’s Hospital, fulfilling its mission to provide care for the sickest children regardless of their families’ ability to pay.
