The Children’s Hospital of San Antonio’s new gardens and outdoor spaces are integral to its transformation into a world-class pediatric hospital, designed to promote healing and enhance well-being. The Play Garden, designed for young children, features grass and plantings to attract birds and butterflies, surrounded by Mexican Sycamore trees. The Prayer Garden pays homage to the hospital’s Catholic roots of The Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word and offers a serene space for prayer and meditation. The Culinary Garden, near the new main entrance on San Saba Street, has irrigated planters overflowing with herbs and vegetables, as well as a covered pavilion for events tucked in the back of the garden. The Memorial Garden, which is not open to the public, honors early settlers and indigenous peoples whose remains were discovered during the 2014 hospital renovation and remain undisturbed, blanketed with prairie grass, wildflowers, and Sycamore trees.
