Within the historic district of Carmel-by-the-Sea, Odyssey emerges as a contemporary sanctuary, offering an idyllic escape by the Pacific Ocean. Revamped with meticulous care, this historic cottage epitomizes contemporary luxury while respecting the historic integrity of the neighborhood, an artists’ community.

The original building had restricted mobility, limited interaction with the outdoors, and no views of the Pacific Ocean. With a focus on connectivity around a central core and a terrace addition with panoramic views, each detail was custom-made and impeccably crafted by the clients themselves, who served as their own general contractor. The home was built in phases to comply with the historic district’s code and regulations.

Embracing sustainability, Odyssey pioneers innovative eco-conscious solutions like a flat green roof which controls stormwater runoff and reduces energy usage, the first of its kind in the region. A model for architectural ingenuity, Odyssey not only captivates its owners but also inspires a new wave of contemporary living in Carmel, serving as a prototype for other new homes and renovations in the area.

The balance between historic and contemporary elements is found in the careful selection of materials. Floors, walls, and stairs are made from raw timber and stone, which are commonly found in the area’s more traditional structures. Contemporary glass artist Gordon Huether was brought in to design patterned glass panels that open the space to natural light and can be made to feel contemporary with the addition of artificial colored lighting.
