When the client sought to reintegrate the iconic Qinhuai River into the grid and culture of Nanjing, OVERLAND was ready to transform this vision into reality by leveraging the river’s potential to become a major artery of economic growth and quality of life for the city. Principal-in-Charge Tim Blonkvist emphasized that a city’s relationship with its rivers can significantly enhance commercial growth and public enjoyment. The natural appeal of a riverside stroll draws in locals and tourists alike, boosting foot traffic for local businesses.

Nanjing’s underutilized riverfront space held immense potential for prosperity for the city’s West Gate. OVERLAND’s approach to urban design, respecting historical restrictions while embracing modern needs, led to a paradigm shift. By focusing on optimal density, OVERLAND ensured the river walk development would thrive without subsidies, providing ample space for diners, shoppers, and residents.

The design connects past and present, creating a transition zone between traditional buildings and modern high-rises. Drawing on the rich history of Ming and Qing dynasties, OVERLAND integrated successful typologies to ensure the new development fits seamlessly into its historical context. This project reinvigorates the Qinhuai River as a vital, vibrant part of Nanjing’s urban fabric.

We want to plan for the future with you.
