The modern building of the Sam and Ann Barshop Institute for Longevity and Aging Studies features a glass and stone exterior, surrounded by a green lawn. With staircases leading to the entrance, it almost seems like an auto draft of architectural innovation.

Client

University of Texas Health Science Center

Project Size

The Barshop Institute project was designed to meet the diverse needs of both human and animal inhabitants, including transgenic mice, naked mole-rats, and marmosets, fostering a sterile environment crucial for their health and longevity. OVERLAND collaborated closely with research scientists to align the building’s program with the institute’s mission, overcoming budgetary challenges to deliver a facility that supports dynamic, collaborative research.

The design integrates rigorous technical requirements for housing research animals with flexible spaces adaptable to evolving research projects. The central gathering space serves as a hub for collaboration among students, teachers, researchers, and scientists, fostering intellectual exchange. By staying true to its mission of promoting collaboration and innovation, the Barshop Institute has earned international recognition as a leading research facility in aging and age-related diseases.

Awards

2007 University of Texas System Certificate of Achievement for Outstanding Accomplishment of Historically Underutilized Business

Without OVERLAND’s contribution as the architects, it probably wouldn’t be the extraordinary facility that we are so proud of today. The design is not just functional – it’s inspiring!
